AUSTRALIA: Knockout Student Art

ASIA MEDIA seeks to spotlight outstanding talent from the Asia-Pacific region that speaks to the cutting edge of our contemporary political concerns and emotional needs as human inhabiting a troubled planet. This issue’s featured art comes from Australia.

It is perhaps hard to believe, but this fabulous 46 x 61 cm multimedia worked titled “Yesterday’s News” comes from Australian high school student Dante Bott-Wakelam.  He was the 21st annual award-winner in the West Australian high-school art competition: ‘Year 12 in Perspectives: Tomorrow’s Artists Revealed Today.’ The student winner comes from Eastern Hills Senior High School.

The contest organizers said this of this year’s entrants: “These talented … graduates explore themes of social disconnection, the move to adulthood, gender identity, disability and the impact of social media…. The 62 [student] artists whose works are on display [at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, until 30 June] challenge us to reflect, explore and understand the world in which they inhabit and provide us with an opportunity to connect to the experiences of the young people of Western Australia.”
