UAE: Bringing the Fight to Social Media

ALESSANDRA DALY JOHNSON WRITES – A new social media war has begun. On July 8, the United States and United Arab Emirates announced the launch of an information warfare center to combat the ‘slick’ social media presence of the Islamic State (known also as IS or Daesh). In a press release from the US government, The Sawab Center is described as, “the first-ever multinational online messaging and engagement program” that “will increase the intensity of online debate by presenting moderate and tolerant voices from across the region.” IS first became a household name in 2014 upon taking control of...

UAE: Flipping the Bird Could Cost You

ALESSANDRA DALY JOHNSON WRITES- Be careful about what emojis you use in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier this May, a middle finger emoji was announced as part of a new Microsoft update, Windows 10, which will be released later this summer.  While this offensive emoji could be mistaken for an upside-down popsicle, it is clearly a hand ‘flipping the bird.’ Following the revelation that Windows 10 would include this update, Emirati police and lawyers have issued a warning to their citizens: using this emoji could end up costing you 3 years in jail or a Dhs 500,000 (roughly $136,123)...

Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC) has re-launched two of its most popular TV channels, Al Emarat and Abu Dhabi.  ADMC is self-described as a “multi-platform media and entertainment organization operating across the broadcast, publishing, and digital media sectors.” Reported by ADMC-owned newspaper The National, ADMC has “adopted the latest media and digital technologies including drones, helicopters and high-speed cameras” in order to keep up with growing trends in entertainment.   As the largest media corporation in the Arab world, ADMC certainly has the funds to make these strides.   But why this seemingly sudden push forward? And why do they feel...

UAE: Fifty Shades Gets Whipped by Censors

ALESSANDRA DALY-JOHNSON WRITES – The highly anticipated film adaptation of the novel Fifty Shades of Grey was deemed inappropriate by the United Arab Emirates’ National Media Council (NMC) this past week. While the infamous book series, written by E. L. James, is available in stores in the UAE, the NMC has concluded that the 125-minute long movie would require 35 minutes’ worth of footage cuts to be considered appropriate for screening. The regional distributor of Fifty Shades has since decided that it will not be releasing the movie, which was originally going to hit theaters on March 5. The UAE...
