TAIWAN: THE TRIUMPH OF RIGHTS CRUSADER CHI CHIA-WEI

KATRINA CROSBY WRITES – On May 24, 2017, Taiwan ignited a beacon of hope for the LGBT community in Asia as its Constitutional Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. Currently, Taiwan is the first country in Asia to take such a stance. The Court’s ruling was the first step towards officially legalizing same-sex marriage. The Court overturned the traditional definition of marriage stated in the Civil Code, which defined marriage as being solely between a man and a woman. The Court stated in a press release following the ruling that such a preference towards heterosexual couples “is incompatible...

SOUTH KOREA AND JAPAN: COMFORTING THE AFFLICTED, SOME DAY

KATRINA CROSBY WRITES – The young girl sits on a chair with a small bird on her left shoulder, her eyes staring straight ahead. A second chair is left empty beside her, inviting onlookers to reflect on what the statue represents. This particular statue is located in Busan, South Korea, near the Japanese consulate, and commemorates comfort women, Koreans forced to service the sexual appetites of Japanese soldiers during World War II. It is a duplicate of the first such statue which went up in Seoul in 2011 near the Japanese Embassy. The statue’s creators, artists Kim Seo-kyung and...

TAIWAN: PIZZA HUT SHOWS TIN EAR ON DAY OF REMEMBERANCE

KATRINA CROSBY WRITES – A national day of anguish and remembrance should not be a day that is taken advantage of by a pizza delivery company. On February 23, Pizza Hut Taiwan posted an offensive pizza promotion to its Facebook page declaring that consumers “celebrate” with “killer” deals during their five-day weekend observing the 70th anniversary of the “228 Incident.” The “228 Incident,” or the February 28 Massacre, involved thousands of civilians who were part of an anti-government uprising in Taiwan. Starting on February 27, 1947, a middleaged widow was assaulted by Taipei City’s Monopoly Bureau over contraband cigarettes....

TAIWAN: ‘Butcher’ vet revealed to be patron saint of abandoned animals

KATRINA CROSBY WRITES – Ninety minutes — the length of a new documentary — was all it took to turn Taiwanese animal shelters and how people view them upside down – and to usher in new legislation giving animals unprecedented rights. On February 3, Taiwan enacted a law making it illegal to euthanize animals left at shelters. Instead, the legislation encourages owners to spay and neuter their pets — thereby lowering the number of animals in need of shelter – and encourages greater public adoption of those without forever homes. It’s great news for cats and (especially) dogs, but...
