BRIAN CANAVE WRITES- Taiwanese government fears losing influence over their citizens to China. With all of the talk about increasing cross straits dialogue, former Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Chiang Pin-kung suggested introducing international news programs such as Hong-Kong based Phoenix TV and Beijing’s state-run China Central Television (CCTV) satellite channels to offer local viewers more choice.
However, Culture Minister Lung Ying Tai wants similar treatment in offering Taiwanese counterparts broadcasting capabilities to mainland China citizens. Many critics are also weary about CCTV’s biased news program under China’s censorship. Lung and other critics are worried about the influence of a closed society like China on an open society like Taiwan.
Will the addition of Chinese news television programs fly with the people of Taiwan? Will China approve of the reciprocity asked by Lung to offer Taiwanese news programs in China?
