AT LMU: A Triumph of Insight and Intellect

David Pilling 1By the staff of Asia Media:  It was a packed house that took in the sweeping and insightful presentation on today’s Japan, from the noted international journalist David Pilling.  The Asia Editor and Asia Columnist of the Financial Times offered the LMU community an intellectually thrilling tour d’horizon of the issues and challenges facing America’s leading ally in Asia.  But the Hong Kong-based Pilling — on a promotion tour for his new book Bending Adversity: Japan and the Art of Survival — offered a refreshing departure from the usual pessimism about the future of the world’s number three economy. In his eyes, the enduring cultural strengths of the Japanese will see them through the hard times and keep them near the top tier of global economies.

David Pilling 2The distinguished journalist was invited to LMU by the university’s Asia Media staff, and the LMU community responded by filling the Van der Ahe venue – a glamorous and spacious facility in the central university library – to capacity.  It was standing room only!

Pilling’s book is available at retail and online outlets, including Amazon.
