JAPAN: Justice Minister Seeks Justice

The private lives of public figures are often the focus of media scrutiny and Japanese Justice Minister Toshio Ogawa is no exception. According to The Mainichi Daily News, Japan’s third leading daily, the Justice Minister “has filed a libel suit against major publishing house Shinchosa Publishing Co” over an article in the magazine Shukan Shincho regarding his divorce.According to Mainichi, Ogawa allegedly “attacked and injured” his wife, actress Yoshie Ichige, in October of 1990. Further, the alleged domestic violence incident purportedly prompted police response. Ogawa’s lawsuit stated that “there is no truth to the claims of violence or that a police car was dispatched.”

This current lawsuit is only the most recent in a series of libel suits that Ogawa has filed over articles regarding his divorce. A trained attorney himself, Ogawa has filed each suit “with no outside legal representation” and “has so far never lost.”
