Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein announced that columnist Mohammad Najeeb A. Kashgari is to be repatriated to his home country, Saudi Arabia. Kashgari, a 23 year old journalist, posted several tweets insulting Islam on the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. At the request of the Saudi Arabian government, the columnist had been detained in Malaysia.
Minister Hussein stated that Malaysia’s policy of extraditing individuals who are wanted by another country justifies Malaysia’s agreement to proceed with the Saudi request for Kashgari’s return. Though many international groups urged Hussein to retract his announcement and allow Kashgari to remain in Malaysia, he was deported on Sunday and awaits charges in Saudi Arabia.
