THAILAND: THE UPS AND DOWNS OF MEDIA SPENDING

Thai based companies and products are definitely investing more in advertisements in Thai media. Reports from a Nielsen survey shows that advertising expenditure in the first quarter this year has recorded a 3.95% year-on-year growth from Bt26.4 billion to Bt25.4 billion.

Perhaps the reasons for this increase spending in ads is from Thailand’s heavy consumption of media. This can be seen as the Internet advertisements claimed a 28% rise to Bt137 million. In fact advertisement expenditures across many media rose in the categories of retail-store, outdoor, newspaper, cinema, radio and television. However, ad expenditure in magazines and transit media has declined.

What’s interesting to note are that the top ten advertisers come mainly from global name brands such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola and Toyota. And it is their Thailand branches that are plowing money into media. Do these ads really help these companies> They should find out soon enough.
